Peacock Flounder
Cozumel, Mexico (San Clamente) – 5/9/2015
The Peacock Flounder gets its name for its top fin that pokes up when it swims. Flounders are great at camouflage – this one gracefully glided along the sand to find some rocks to rest on. Fun fact about flounders: They are born with eyes on each sides of their heads but as they age, one of the eyes migrates to the other side. As an adult, flounders changes its habits and camouflages itself by lying on the bottom of the ocean floor as protection against predators. As a result, the eyes are on the side that faces up.
