Catalina, California (Crane Base) – 5/28/2017

This was a difficult ID because Red Irish Lords are rare in this location.  This might be a California Scorpionfish, but we ID-ed it as a Red Irish Lord because of the distinctive bars and the notch in the fins.

The distinguishing features are the 3 dark bars on the tail. These fish have venomous spines and puncture wounds can cause severe pain and illness. You don’t want to bother or step on one of these guys (which can be tricky, because their nickname is “stonefish” because they blend in with the other stones and rubble near the beach).
